Folklore in Tarapoto

 

The dances, music and songs of Tarapoto have great influence of people of Lamas, inherited from the Chanca and Andean areas.

CARNIVAL

FEAST OF SAN JUAN

In the Amazon area of Peru, Saint John the Baptist has taken on a major symbolic significance because of the importance of water as a vital element in the entire Amazon region. This is why June 24 (St. John's the Baptist's day) is the most important date on the festival calendar in the entire Peruvian jungle. The northeastern city of Tarapoto hosts a variety of festivals and public events: fiestas with typical local bands where cooks dish up some of the regional cuisine, featuring tacacho (baked banana) and juanes (rice pastries), named after the patron saint, San Juan Bautista. This carnival atmosphere, redolent with the warmth of the local hospitality, has given rise to the myth of a special sensuality to be found inTarapoto. It is widely held that the best aphrodisiacs are concocted in Tarapoto, potions blended from fruits and herbs steeped in sugarcane alcohol, with strange and suggestive names. FEAST OF LA PATRONA (THE PATRON FEAST)

TOURIST WEEK

CRAFTS

TYPICAL FOOD TARAPOTO

  • Avispajuane: Has the same features of juane of rice, but has no egg, add ground pork.
  • Juane de Gallina: It is a traditional dish in the festivities of San Juan. It is shaped like a big tamale, prepared with rice, chicken and eggs, which is wrapped in a sheet called bijao.
  • Ninajuane: This dish is similar to earlier in his presentation but that is prepared with beaten egg and chicken wrapped in banana leaves. Both are cooked traditionally in so-called "tushpas" which are typical cuisines of coal or wood.
  • Tacacho with cecina and/or chorizo: The tacacho, is the fried banana and crushed to be mixed with pork fat, usually served with beef jerky, which is the dry pork and smoked, or regional sausage is a sausage made ​​with pig's small intestines and stuffed with ground beef but it spicy.
  • Inchicapi: It is a soup prepared from ground peanuts or liquefied chicken farm, cassava, corn, cilantro leaf, garlic, salt and cumin.

Among the typical drinks in the area are the masato, chapo, the ventisho, chicha of maize, aguajina, cocona and grape juice. The exotic and aphrodisiacs drinks are siete raices (seven roots), chuchuhuasi, uvachado and cerezachado.
