Peru a Living Culture

Discover Chachapoyas

Discover the fascinating region of Chachapoyas, known as the “jungle eyebrows” in the North of Peru, a walled fortress built in 6th century A.D, on a ridge overlooking the Utcubamba Valley. Its impressive size (19 meters high, 600 meters long and 110 meters wide) and the considerable effort that its construction represents earned it the nickname “Machu Picchu of the North” and turned this area into a perfect alternative destination for travellers seeking adventure off the beaten path.

Chachapoyas and its region offer many other attractions, such as Gocta cataracts (third-tallest free-leaping waterfall in the world), the impressive trek to the Lake of the Condors, also known as Lake of the Mummies, the sarcophagus of Karajía, or the endemic Marvelous Spatuletail Hummingbird. This remote area of Peru has the advantage of not yet being disfigured by the mass tourism industry, so travellers will enjoy visiting such amazing places without the presence of thousands of tourists.
There are not direct flights from Lima to Chachapoyas city, but you can fly to Jaen, and then join Chachapoyas by bus in less than 4 hours. You can also arrive by bus from Trujillo or Tarapoto according to your itinerary.
