The mountain sport at Los Andes, has special importance on the White Mountain range, inside the National Park of Huascarán, being
one of the places of more attractiveness. The Mountain range of Huayhuash, is also
another ideal scenery for the mountaineering, and it offers bigger degrees of
difficulty.
Among the main climbers on ice, the peaks of the White Mountain range, the
highest in Peru, and the ones in Huayhuash, are located in the world tour. The
easiness of their roads and accesses allow to achieve several routes of ascents,
taking as starting point the city of Huaraz, and favored by an excellent
weather.
The glacier summits, offer high challenges to the most experienced climbers;
there are also easy peaks for less expert climbers that demand a few hours and
simple ascensions. For the professional experts, exist virgin roads with almost
vertical flanks that combine rock tracks and ice.
Peru possesses a great number of peaks that are very more coveted by the
professionals of the mountaineering in the world, many of these peaks, are in
the White Mountain range. The mountaineer can try to climb several summits in a
short lapse.
Recommendations for the practice of
mountaineering (andinismo)
Climate: The most advisable and secure months for ascensions
are May and June by the south and southwest flanks which have more difficulty.
For the classic ascensions the advisable season is from May to August. As being
a tropical mountain range, the temperatures are not very low, and during the day
you can wear light clothes.
Access facilities: It is quick and easy from the small towns
that are located in the foothills of each mountain. From these towns it can
solved the problems of provisioning and logistics. Daily transport exists
between these towns and the city of Huaraz.
Mountain Guides: In Huaraz or Lima, you can hire the services of
experienced mountain guides. These can provide you all the necessary equipment
and the logistics that demands this experience. The guide will be able to inform
you about the characteristics of the routes.
Maps: The best maps can be acquired in "Instituto
Geofísico Nacional" (National Geophysical Institute) in the
city of Lima, or in the services of mountain guides.
Ascent difficulty: Different degrees of technique difficulty
exist; the mountaineer should be informed on them and choose the equipment and
route according to their experience.
For the ascensions of more difficulty, stakes of 90 cm. should be used to
fasten the fixed strings. The avalanche risk will be always
present.
