The Tambopata Research Center is a Spartan yet comfortable 18-bedrooms lodge built by
Rainforest Expeditions with the object of lodging tourists and researchers alike while protecting the adjacent macaw clay lick.
Because of its remote location in the uninhabited wilderness located in the core of the
Tambopata Candamo
Reserved Area, its small size and the presence of researchers and naturalist guides, Tambopata Research Center is an excellent headquarters for in-depth nature explorations of Amazonian nature and wildlife.
It is designed to provide the creature comforts necessary for enhancing the wilderness experience without compromising its authenticity.
Rooms are small with large windows facing the forest that keep visitors in permanent contact with nature. Bathrooms are shared, a total of eight for thirteen rooms.
Buffet meals combine international and local cuisine.
Tambopata Research Center Nature Expeditions
Daily departures from Lima or Cuzco to Tambopata Research Center are available for five to seven
day tours combining two or three nights at Posada
Amazonas and/or
Refugio Amazonico with a one to three night stay at TRC.
In a six day trip combining Posada
Amazonas with Tambopata Research Center you may see giant river otters, macaws and parrots descend to ingest clay at a lick, up to six species of primates, and just maybe, one or two large mammals such as tapir or peccary.
You will have a chance to learn from the Ese'eja natives and rain forest settlers their relation to the forest and briefly study the Amazonian rain forest.
Finally you will also watch the forest from atop a 35 meter observation tower, silently paddle a catamaran through an oxbow lake, visit a local settler's farm, observe the world's largest macaw clay lick and more than 25 located macaw nesting sites, hike on primary rain forest trails, birdwatch along seven distinct easily accessible habitats, and interact with professional researchers and their on-site projects.
Guides are Peruvian naturalists working at a 6:1 tourist to guide ratio.
Rainforest Expeditions
Rainforest Expeditions is a Peruvian ecotourism company founded in 1992 that owns two ecolodges in the Connecticut -sized Tambopata Nature Reserve in southeastern Amazonian Peru. At
30 rooms Posada Amazonas we have partnered with the Ese'eja Native Community to produce unequalled three to five day introductory nature tours combining natural and cultural activities.
At 18 rooms Tambopata Research Center, our privileged location in the uninhabited core of the reserve allows to produce exciting five to seven day intense nature expeditions to rare wildlife attractions such as the world's largest macaw clay lick. We also offer customized Peru tours for birdwatchers and parrot lovers, rainforest biology workshops for students, and, in association with Earth watch, macaw research trips.
Our work in ecotourism has been acknowledged with Conservation International's Ecotourism Excellence Award and Conde Nast Traveler's Ecotourism Award.
