Huaraz -
Chavin. (Private
Transportation). We head south on the same road that heads to Lima. After
about 36 kilometers we turn left at Catac. One and a half hours later, after
taking the 66 kilometer detour to Chavin and driving by the beautiful lake
of Querococha and the Kahuish tunnel in
Huascaran National Park you will have reached the Konchukos Tambo.
Orientation. After check in and room assignment the manager will give a
short briefing on the lodge and the Konchukos Valley.
Lunch.
Chavin. Ten minutes by car from the lodge are the reknown archaeological
remains of Chavin de Huantar, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. This ceremonial center was important to Pre-Hispanic Andean
cultures from around 800 BC, when the first expansive Andean culture, known
as Chavin, built it. Despite being subject to centuries of natural and
manmade destruction (it was used as a quarry), its breathtaking scenery,
massive stonework, labyrinthine tunnels, elaborate drainage and ventilation,
its gargoylesque carved heads and lithic artwork present a unique image of
Pre-Hispanic Peru. After visiting the ruins we will drop by the artisans’
workshop to see what stone or textile handicrafts are in stock for shopping.
Carhuascancha Valley hike. From the lodge we drive to the trailhead in
the Carhuascancha Valley. We begin this seven hour hike traversing wooded
and breezy hillsides above the Mosna River. Four hours of rigorous hiking
later, we are at Ichicpotrero lagoon. Formed by glacial waters and
surrounded by well-preserved high Andean Polylepis forest and snow capped
peaks we will spend several hours resting and taking in exhilarating views.
After a picnic lunch, we return to our lodge the same way we came,
completing seven hours of walking in by the late afternoon.
Dinner.
Overnight at Konchukos Tambo.
Day 3: (B-L)
Breakfast.
Carhuayoc Valley hike. We will begin this four hour hike in the valley
of Carhuayoc, where we will visit textile weavers in their backyard shops.
Amongst the guinea pigs and drying corn in their gardens, these farmers
turned artists will demonstrate how marvelous tapestries are woven in
intricate wooden looms inherited from their grandfathers. We then follow
mountain trails to return to the town of San Marcos.
Lunch.
Chavin - Huaraz. (Private Transportation.) Just after leaving Konchukos
Tambo, the road will take us up the Konchukos Valley, thru the Carhuish
tunnel, past the beautiful Querococha lake and to the detour of Catac, 1
hour and 30 minutes and 66 kilometers later. At Catac we turn right and head
north for 36 kilometers and 30 more minutes to Huaraz.
PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION
We rent eight to twenty seat vans and buses for private transportation to and
from Huaraz and other locations without good public bus services. We leave a few
empty spaces for comfort. For three people or less we use pickup trucks or
station wagons.
INTERPRETATION SERVICES
Our guides are tourism professionals, local townsfolk, or trained high Andean
mountain guides (for treks). Not all of our guides, particularly local
townsfolk, speak English. In those cases, your fee includes a translator. We
have a maximum guest to guide ratio of 12:1 in the Andes because of the context
of the environment – wide open spaces, little wildlife, etc. Also, because of
specialization, your guide for the archaeological monuments may be different
from the trekking or hiking guides. Your guides will accompany you throughout
the activities, but not the transfers nor the meals. If you would like a private
guide, a specialist guide or a guide in a language other than English please let
us know.
