Early in the morning, we leave with a private vehicle in the direction of Kuelap fortress, famous archaeological site of chachapoya to 600 m long and 20 m high walls.
It is the best-known in the region but also the largest Prehispanic one. The archaeological site consists of several sectors as the Malca, the fortress and the Barreta, which stands out particularly the fortress we will visit.
The fortress of Kuelap, built around 500 B.C., is located at 3000 m altitude on a plateau dominating by the Valley of the Utcubamba. It comes in the form of two large medians lying, bunk, and surrounded each of a wall on the East and South sides. It covers an extension of 6 ha. The archaeological complex houses about 500 structures which allows to propose that, at its peak, the site housed about 3000-3500 inhabitants. A unique atmosphere in the streets of this citadel still enveloped by tropical vegetation.

Note: In December 2016 must open the cable car which will join the village of TingoNuevo to the site of Kuelap. The new travel time will be 2 h round trip ground transportation over 45 min - 1 hour round trip cable car.
