Day 1: Arrive Lima
Arriving into Peru’s First City, we’ll greet you at the airport and bring you to your hotel in Miraflores district for rest and relaxation after your long journey.
Day 2: Lima, Miraflores and journey to Ballestas Islands.
After a rejuvenating breakfast, we’ll meet you at your hotel an informal orientation to your new environment. The trendy Miraflores district (where you’ll be waking up this morning) is on the waterfront to the south of central Lima. With a wide variety of restaurants, coffee shops and an outdoor mall, Pedestrian friendly Miraflores (“Look the Flowers”) is the most culturally vibrant square mile in Peru – a great place to stroll around and explore. After lunch, we’ll depart Lima and drive south into the desert to spend the evening in the small beachfront town of Paracas, which is the staging area for boat trips to the nearby Ballestas Islands.
Day 3: Ballestas Islands.
Waking up in our hotel on the Paracas bay, we’ll board a boat for the Ballestas Islands where we’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with sea lions, Peruvian boobies, pelicans, flightless cormorants and dolphins. After Lunch, we’ll journey inland to the Huacachina Dunes. Huancachina offers the most spectacular dunes in Peru. Stretching several hundred feet high, this is a perfect place to enjoy the day sand boarding.
Day 4: Nazca Lines and return to Lima.
Experience a scenic airplane ride over the famous Nazca Lines – mysterious, miles-wide geoglyphs carved into the sand of the Nazca desert. After lunch we’ll return to Lima where you’ll be able to enjoy your evening in the city before embarking for the Andes the next morning.
Day 5: Explore the City of Cusco
After a refreshing breakfast, we’ll pick you up from your hotel for transport back to the airport and your hour-long flight up to Cusco, where you’ll receive transport to your hotel in the city center. Enjoy the remainder of the morning to explore the colonial center, then embark on a tailored cultural, archeological and physical exploration of the area surrounding Cuzco — visiting and hiking through a few local agrarian villages of the area. You’ll be traveling between sites with a guide/driver via private vehicle, so the “tour” is really quite flexible and will give you a good feel for the geography and the environment of the city country yard while giving you a chance to acclimate.
Day 6 – 8:
Whitewater Raft the Apurimac River or Trek to Machu Picchu (your choice)
The three-day Apurimac rafting trip is objectively considered one of the best multi-day rafting trips in the world. You’ll appreciate this wonderful culminating experience as you plunge through exciting whitewater, relax during calmer sections, and camp in secluded, beach side campsites each night. Returning to Cusco and civilization at the end of your final day on the river, you can enjoy the evening in the European-Andean style city center.
Traversing the Andean peaks and passes above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the multi-day Inca Trail and Salkantay Treks offer the most integrated way to travel to Machupicchu. Visiting different ruins in route, the official Inca Trail offers more of an archeological discovery tour, whereas the more scenic (and less crowded) Salkantay Trek traverses through pristine Andean landscapes on the way to Machu Picchu.
Day 9: Machupicchu
From Machu Picchu town (former Aguas Calientes), you’ll be able to be among the first to arrive at the beginning of the day to the Machu Picchu site, enjoying the full day at the citadel before catching the evening train back to Cuzco for transport to your hotel.
Day 10: From The Andes to the Amazon
Hotel Pickup in Cuzco and transport to the airport for your morning flight back to Lima to take the plane to the Jungle. Receive a greeting at the airport and transport to your hotel in Iquitos for rest and the afternoon on your own to explore the world’s largest city that is inaccessible via roadway.
Day 11: Begin Amazon Adventure
Orient to the Amazon with a speed boat trip to the secluded Sinchicuy Jungle Lodge. Built on high ground, this native-style lodge is surrounded by trees, plants and exotic birds. Savor a refreshing welcome drink at the lodge before embarking on a cultural and environmental orientation of the local area. First we’ll take a short hike or canoe trip to an indigenous Yagua Community where we’ll learn about the native culture, then visit the area Shaman who will demonstrate the healing properties of the local flora. Turing our attention to the fauna of this ecologically rich region, we’ll visit a nearby animal rescue center.
Returning to the Sinchicuy Jungle Lodge for lunch, we’ll enjoy a chef-prepared meal rich in local plants, roots and produce supplied by area farmers. Fortified for the afternoon’s journey to the Tambo Yanayacu Lodge, we’ll board a boat and traverse to the opposite bank of the Amazon where we’ll make a short portage to the Yanayacu River, known as the “Kingdom of the Giant Trees.” From this incredibly ecologically rich location, we’ll be able to enjoy the calls of jungle birds, search for monkeys and three-toed sloths in the forest canopy and learn about the precious medicinal plants unique to these tropical surroundings.
Take time during the afternoon to make a short trek to secluded Oxbow Lake where you can spy exotic bird species such as the Horned Screamer. Wind down before dinner with a lazy canoe ride before sitting down to the evening’s jungle feast.
Day 12: Continue Amazon Adventure
The early morning hours are the best time to sight and photograph the myriad of bird species as they catch breakfast on the river. After the birds have had their fill, you can retire back to the lodge for your waiting breakfast before embarking on an invigorating hike to Yagua Cocha, one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the region. On this secluded jungle lake, you can take the opportunity to spot wildlife or try your hand at traditional native fishing aboard a dugout canoe.
Replenish with a boxed lunch by the lakeside, or our cook will help you prepare your catch. After lunch, we’ll make the return trek to the Yanayacu Jungle Lodge where we’ll take part in a reforestation project by planting a few native trees. As the sun dips towards dinner, you can visit and explore a local agrarian village, or canoe and swim in one of the gentle creeks that flow near the lodge.
Day 13: Conclude Amazon Adventure
After breakfast, we’ll board a boat for the start of our return journey towards civilization and Lima, stopping off to visit a typical Amazon River village on the way back to the Sinchicuy Lodge for lunch. After our last meal in the Jungle, we’ll continue the Amazon boat trip to Iquitos where we’ll bring you to the airport for your departure from Iquitos, putting you into Lima that evening. Airport greeting with transport to your hotel in Miraflores.
