About Lima City

Called "Ciudad de los Reyes" (City of Kings), it was founded by the Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro on January 18th , 1535 on Rímac Valley in which several pre-Inca cultures had been developed, then dominated by the Inca Empire.

 

Lima is the capital of the Republic of Peru and it is a great metropolis and has more than 8 million inhabitants. In Lima you will find fascinating contrasts nuances between the archaeological places, colonial architecture and the modern city.

 

During the colonial time, it was the most important city in South America and it concentrated the whole trade of the Hispanic colonies toward Spain, reaching their maximum splendor during the XVII and XVIII centuries. It was the capital of "Nueva Castilla" also after the Viceroyalty of Peru. From Callao, many territories in the Pacific coast were discovered such as the Polynesia and nowadays you can discover all the enchantments of Peru.

 

In Lima you will find imposing colonial monuments, museums in which you will be able to recreate a complete image of the millennial Peruvian past in its archaeology, history and art.

Historical Centre of Lima: (UNESCO World Heritage Site). During the colonial time, the city of Lima, headquarters of the Viceroy, was walled and in this area the main Spanish constructions were built constituting invaluable historical monuments. The highlights are the colonial mansions and the religious monuments as San Francisco, San Pedro and Santo Domingo churches. In the Government Palace every day at 11:45 a.m. is carried out the ceremony of Changing the Guard that is recommended to attend. Also China Town.

 

Museums in Lima: To come closer to the millennial Peruvian culture, Lima has diverse museums, the best ones of Peru, on which you would be transport in the archaeological, historic and artistic ambits. The museums of Lima keep the richest collections in the whole Peruvian past. Archaeological Places in Lima: The geographical area of Lima, before the Spanish foundation in 1535, was inhabited by diverse pre-Inca cultures and then dominated by the Incas, who have bequeathed magnificent constructions and temples, conserved and restored. South of Lima is Pachacámac, an eye catching pre-Hispanic complex that was site of the most important pilgrimage shrine in ancient Peru, also the archaeological complex of Huaca Pucllana, Huallamarca, Puruchuco, Cajamarquilla, Mateo Salado, Paramonga, among others. 

 

Caral, the oldest city in America: (UNESCO World Heritage Site) The Sacred City of Caral 5000-year-old and 626-hectare is an archaeological site situated on a dry desert terrace overlooking the green valley of the Supe river, 184 Km. north of Lima city. It dates back to the Late Archaic Period of the Central Andes and is the oldest centre of civilization in the Americas.

 

San Isidro and Miraflores: These are two districts (suburbs) of Lima that are characterized by the modernity of their constructions and services, today both concentrate most of the best hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, nightlife centers, the banking, commercial and trade centers. San Isidro is characterized by green areas and exclusive residential neighborhoods, especially the traditional area of El Olivar, named that way because of the hundreds of olive trees growing in the park. Miraflores is overlooking the Pacific Ocean and has several beaches and cliffs where paragliding is a daily practice, surfing in Costa Verde beach.

 

Rímac : Is a neighborhood located in the north bank of the Rímac river, near to historical center, in which you will be able to find beautiful colonial constructions as Paseo de Aguas, Alameda de los Descalzos and the famous "Plaza de Toros de Acho" (Bullring of Acho).

 

Barranco : District of Lima called "The city of the Mills", gentle place visited by poets, artists and bohemians. An early twentieth century beach resort for the Lima aristocracy, it is new the main artistic neighborhood of the city with lovely homes and corners with disco techs, pubs, and cafes that present musical and cultural shows.

 

Lima Entertainment: Lima is a fast-moving modern metropolis, is known as the gastronomic capital of South America for a culinary legacy that inherited superb pre-Hispanic and colonial cooking traditions and was nurtured by the best Western and Oriental cooking. Cultural shows, art galleries, casinos, nightlife, bars, discos, Indian Market and shopping malls, a lot on offer.
