The
Machu Picchu sanctuary in the mountain
heights is the image that Man created
of his surroundings. The terraces symbolize the various levels
of the cosmos; the communication between
the upper world, this world and netherworld
(hanak pacha, kay pacha and
uku pacha, according to Andean beliefs);
the canals and fountains are the image
of a river that has been channeled, where
water has been tamed.
Machu Picchu is "like a main shrine that
functioned with greater efficiency, as
if all things sacred were concentrated
here, and as if this residence gathered
together all those who wielded the charisma
of absolute power". Luis E. Valcárcel |
